10 out of 12 Danelectro EP cover

Yo La Tengo - Danelectro EP
(Matador)

Yo La Tengo have offered us a new EP, which takes on the daunting task of living up to their last album, Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. Surprisingly, it holds its own pretty well. Three different versions of "Danelectro" appear on this EP, accompanied by a remix for each. "Danelectro I" is a delicate, fingerpicked song with a simple melody and a bedroom pop feel. The remix for this track is by far the better remix. It follows the melody of the original, only it's done on a keyboard instead of a guitar. Complimentary beeps and drones add the ambience to fill the song out. There are very few remixes I like, and this is definitely one of them.

The second and third versions of Danelectro fall further and further short of the first, respectively. Though, the remix of the second has much less to offer than the original. The third at least gives good source material for a decent remix.

Each time I listen to the tracks besides "Danelectro I" or the remix of "Danelectro I," it makes me appreciate how great "Danelectro I" is. So, if you're a sucker like me, then this EP is worth getting just for those two songs...or one song, if you want to be picky.
