Davey Williams and Numb Right Thumb - Texas was Delicious (Megalon)
Guitarist Davey Williams and Orlando experimental group
Numb Right Thumb got together one day last year and
improvised a whole 44 minute album, Texas Was Delicious.
The album is much like the music of noise rockers such
as US Maple in that the guitar that leads these journeys
has a strong metallic tinge and its solos always seem to
be one note away from falling apart, all part of some
well executed chaos.
Numb Right Thumb accompany
Williams well on his journeys, using saxophone, marimba,
violin, percussion, and various "toys." The background
they create, with all its beats and heavily processed,
smoothed out instruments, ends up sounding quite a bit
like Spaceheads and Andy Diagram's electronically-altered
trumpet. Williams is the star here, though, sounding like
Jimmy Page on a bad acid trip pretending he is in a
Southern jam band. Williams' tongue always seems to be
planted firmly in his cheek. The relaxed mood his sense
of humor creates is heard clearly in the music, as all
the musicians seem loose and free to go down whatever
detours they find.
Williams uses a good mix of exploration and
just plain old rocking out to make music that should
appeal to both fans of weirded-out rock music and jazz
guitar improvisation. Word from the label, Megalon, is
that Williams will be recording with brian_and_chris
soon, and his guitar should mix very well with their
new metal-dub direction. If this release is any
indication, the combination of the two acts should be
magnificent.
