Von Lmo - Future Language (Flemish Masters)
"The group from the future is here now! Advance yourself!" announces the cover of
this CD. Von Lmo (pronounced "Von El-Mo") and his band came from the future to bring
a message to the kids: "Long live heavy metal!"
Originally released in the early 1980's (and known to me only by it's inclusion in
Chuck Eddy's Stairway To Hell book), this (only?) Von Lmo album has been lost for
years until Weasel Walter's Flemish Masters label decided to reissue it.
It's easy to see why Weasel likes this album so much: it's completely retarded.
While they look like a huge Devo rip-off on the cover, Von Lmo sounds more like a
bad punk band with a saxophone. Guitars definitely dominate this album, although
the few sax freakouts are definitely the highlights, sounding like Roxy Music or
Pere Ubu outtakes.
The songwriting is primitive, and the sci-fi schtick gets old pretty fast. The
production, while terrible, is oddly charming. Lmo's voice constantly overdrives
the microphone, and the drums sound like they are made out of paper. The less punky
tracks are sorta fun and dancy, at some points even resembling a more psychedelic
Contortions (as on "Ultraviolet Light").
This record is hard to make it all the way through, though it is oddly entertaining. Definitely a good one for parties, though, and their logo was cool, too.
