Tristeza - Are We People 7" (Tiger Style)
Ah, the teaser single. In the times of digital music and internet downloads,
is there any real point to teasers now other than to screw kids out of $4?
There may be no bigger insult to the vinyl single than to relegate it to being
used only for teasers.
As with most teasers, this Tristeza 7" gives you one song from the album
you'll buy in a month and one song that didn't fit on that album. The single
is made of flimsy vinyl and packaged in flimsy cardboard. In fact, I might
as well just describe the b-side as flimsy, as well.
The a-side packs a pretty solid groove, rocking the tectonic fairly strongly.
If this song is any indication, Tristeza seems to be moving ever so slightly
from being Tortoise-esque to being To Rococo Rot-esque as this song is based
on one tight, compact groove that repeats itself throughout the life of the
song. Maybe To Rococo Rot-esque was a better classification for the
band all along.
The b-side is tame in comparison, being a lot quieter and a lot more mellow.
The only instrument with anything to say on this song is the drums, giving
a prominent, jazz-like beat. Overall, I've heard backing music on Janet
Jackson songs that are as good as this track, which is not a 100% negative
comment but definitely not positive.
The full length will come out soon enough. Borrow this from a friend or
download the b-side on Napster; there is no reason to waste
your money on this single. It is made for completists and idiots only,
of which I guess you would count me as the latter.
