Sonna are from Baltimore. One of the members of the band runs the fabulous
Temporary Residence Ltd label. Sonna's 3 song EP, These Windows are
Pistons, fits in nicely in between the Aerial M full length and Tristeza.
The bass finds a melodic groove, and the drums follow with enough of a jazz
twist to fit the bass without overemphasizing the groove too much. The two
guitars work as a "main" guitar and a "complimentary" guitar, neither
taking too much or too little room in the song. At this point in Sonna's
songwriting, the above post-rock pigeonhole is adequate to describe them,
but subtle vocals and what sounds like a keyboard (but may be a well
treated guitar) can catapult These Windows are Pistons to different musical
territory.
A nice change in the feel of the EP is on the second song where the cymbals
were recorded high, distorting them. This dimension adds to the song more
and more after each successive listen.
Sonna is a promising band, and I wholeheartedly recommend getting your hands
on this EP as well as their EP that was a part of the now sold out Travels in
Constants series (if you can bribe someone who already has it).
