Sigur Rós - Svefn - G - Englar EP
(Fat Cat)

A nice used record find, this 12" displays the Icelandic band Sigur Rós. Previous comparisons to Godspeed You Black Emperor! were enough to scare me away at first, but this record proved to be well worth the $4. Because they write long pieces with strings and different instruments, the Godspeed You Black Emperor comparison is obvious, but anyone who actually listens to the music will hear otherwise. While Godspeed You Black Emperor music is based on heavy rock buildups and the like, Sigur Ros have much more command of dynamics and are able to write emotional music without falling into the cliché. Plus, they have vocals, albeit Icelandic, which make the whole thing sound sorta like the Cocteau Twins (in a weird way). Very, very pleasant and there's a lot going on, too.
