This 7" is a split between two bands that I really love. The Rex song isn't available anywhere else and features Curtis Harvey, Josh Mattews, and Joan Wasser. There are a lot of rumors that they will never play together as a band again, so I'll be damned if I was going to miss out on this 7". The song starts off with Curtis playing acoustic guitar and
singing. After a few measures, violin enters the mix and the guitar, violin, and vocals start to crescendo as drums, bass guitar, and female vocals build the song into the more lush sound you expect from a Rex song.
Listening to this Rex song makes me sad because it captures and contains all of the warmth and beauty that most of the the post-Rex releases/projects have been lacking.
The Songs: Ohia side of the 7" contains a song, which is an alternate version from their Axxess and Ace album. Sadly, this version of the song is actually one of the few songs of Jason Molina's that I don't love. It is a good song, it features a lot of the qualities that I love about Songs: Ohia, but it quickly goes from quiet to loud and starts to rock with a more straight forward blues guitar riff that would seem more at home at the end of a
Karl Hendrick's Trio song. Don't get me wrong, I think Karl has his moments, I just like my Songs: Ohia more rock-free.
This 7" is a must for all Rex fans, and is also a great find for fans of Songs: Ohia.
