Planetarium - Age of Anxiety (Priapus)
A friend of mine once recorded a song about a man going insane
because machines had taken over the Earth, had murdered all
the other humans, and were coming for him. The opening song "Circus
Wheel" on Planetarium's Age of Anxiety sounds like what I imagine the
conquering machines would hear as they took over the planet for the
purpose of total world machination.
Planetarium create very full, lush soundscapes, with a little
experimentation mixed in here and there. "Hell For You" has a thick,
wind tunnel-esque drone which gives way to a higher register drone,
serving as the backdrop for piano, violin, xylophone, and saxophone
which crash together in noisy, chaotic disarray. It works well for
breaking up the similarity in sounds, making the thick multi-layered
drones more effective. "Siberia" is perfectly described by it's
title. I swear Henry Rollins is talking on "Tranquility," but I could
be mistaken. Regardless, the music is abrasive yet still pretty, which
also describes Hank Rollins (not his music, him).
If you're into drone à la Stars of the Lid, and you like the idea of thick
layering, Planetarium are for you.
