Pinback - Tripoli CD Single
(Cutty Shark)

Pinback is Rob Crow (singer/guitarist for Heavy Vegetable, Thingy, Physics, etc) and ABS4 (bass player Three Mile Pilot). They sound exactly like what you'd expect from combining those two musician's styles: tense yet pretty pop. "Tripoli" is the opening track on their full length and what a wonderful track it is! There are a total of six tracks on this single. Of course, the album version of "Tripoli" is on it. But, sadly, all 5 others are remixes. I've never been a fan of remixes, and these are no exception. They all sound as if a beat were applied to a Pinback song, then the remixer rerecorded some guitar or bass parts with a keyboard to make it sound more like Pinback is a dance band, not a pop band. Maybe the lesson to be learned from this single is that there is a fine, but very important line between Mouse on Mars and C+C Music Factory.
