Various Artists - Louisville Sonic Imprint
(Ghetto Defendant)

Louisville's music scene has received a great deal of attention in past years. The city has spawned Slint, Rodan, Will Oldham, and many related bands/projects. This compilation documents some of those artists, as well as other lesser known bands from this unlikely hotbed of innovative rock and roll.

Bonnie Prince Billy contributes a great track titled, "Song for the New Breed," which gives a nod to his first album with the pared down acoustic guitar/vocals instrumentation.

Papa M appear with a demo version of "Drunken Spree" which was on the Live From A Shark Cage album. It's rough and a little sloppy which gives the song a fresh dynamic that the smooth and natural album version did not have.

Tara Jane O'Neil's "Another Sunday Saint / I Keep It With Mine" sounds just like the song from the singer/songwriter single on Troubleman Records. But hey, it is a nice song.

A couple of lesser knowns grabbed my attention as well. Paden's "All that He Could Muster" is a nice pop song with mumbled vocals. At Right Angles (Nathan Salsburg of Halifax Pier) contribute a track that gets me excited to hear the EP he'll release in the second year of Temporary Residence's Travels in Constants series.

This is an eclectic collection with some essential tracks and some forgettable tracks. For me, Louisville's scene is pretty hit or miss, though always creative.
