The Locust/Arab on Radar - Split 7"
(Gold Standard Laboratories)

I've never really gotten excited about or even been the least bit interested in hardcore. So, it comes as no surprise that I have a hard time with The Locust. Their completely unrestrained sort of electronic hardcore sometimes makes me laugh because it can get kind of absurd (in the stupid way). The vocals are screamed with virtually no pronunciation, which I have to admit, is pretty amusing and somewhat charming. However, the joke gets old, and their songs don't grab me.

Now, Arab on Radar on the other hand, are a little more art rock than hardcore (forgive the nitpicking please), and I have enjoyed a number of things they've done. However, when they removed the bass guitar from their lineup, they focus of the band seemed to get lost in the mass of chaos they're so good at creating. It worked pretty well on their new album, but this 7" shows why maybe it wasn't such a great move. There are certainly great parts, and some elements are reminiscent of great Arab on Radar moments, but overall it leads me to wonder if Arab on Radar aren't really the childish group of fools they'd have us believe they are.

This 7" comes in 5 different colors to correspond with a different body fluid (they're also shaped like a puddle): white, brown, yellow, green and red. I got the red. So is it simply a coincidence that the picture indicating the source of the body fluid is a drawing of a slit wrist? No, I think not.
