2 out of 12 Houdini 7" cover

Jessamine - Houdini 7"
(Barsuk)

This is the lowest score I have ever given anything and is based more on my expectations of a band that I have truly loved than the actual quality of the music. With that said, I am extremely disappointed by this last piece of a great band's recorded output. Jessamine has meant so much to me because of the way they melded the sounds of space rock with excellent songcrafting. This expression of a pop sensibility led me to form a band with a similar outlook on the relation between pop and drone.

On this release, Jessamine try to negate all that I hold dear. There are no pop structures and no hints of Dawn Smithson's wonderful vocals. The drums never take off and the bass only stutters and punctuates. It literally sounds as if the band is making fun of what I loved about them. I think I'll go home and cry.
