Japancakes / 8-Track Gorilla - Split 7"
(French Lick)

This Athens based 7 piece band have really impressed me this year with their Down the Elements EP on Kindercore Records, so I was excited to buy this 7". Their side of the 7" is called "Version One" and is a more subdued variation to the track of the same name on their latest Ep. The song starts out with a fairly slow and steady repeating bass rhythm serving as the main structure while buried drums and multiple various sound textures slide in and out of the mix. Eventually the textures overwhelm the structure, and the song fades in to a soothing collage of sound.

The 8-Track Gorilla contribution is a song called "Wild and Peaceful (featuring Kitty)." It starts with a recording of the "Rocky" theme song blending into sampled funky disco beats. The rest of the song is a patchwork of mostly sampled 70s funk and disco cut and pasted together with spoken-word band propaganda and a recorded phone conversation (presumably with Kitty) used to tie the song together.
