The Champs - Second 7"
(Wattage USA)

The Champs are among the best of the new breed of metal bands around. While rocking along the lines of Karp and C-Average, The Champs take a more technical view to rock than their peers. One of the members of The Champs was in Nation of Ulysses, which of course provides them with more "rock and roll cred" than they could ever need.

Side A, "Thor (is like Immortal)," is the better side, and the song also appears on their great new Drag City album IV. It's a 22 track recording of metal licks and riffs with plenty of fifths to give it that late 80's guitar solo sound. The song is so extremely technical sounding, it takes on an air of classical music by the midway point. There are a number of parts, all with frilly solo lines, and a constantly moving groundwork of rhythm guitar(s) (or perhaps more accurately, "slightly-less lead guitar") which keeps things stabilized. Side B fills all the needs for a more full rock song, using a full band lineup. All around this 7" touches on both extremes making it a very nice and fulfilling 7" to listen to.
