Blek Ink - s/t (Ba Da Bing!)
The otherwise decent Ba Da Bing label has released the artist known as Blek Ink upon
the world. Never before in my life have I ever heard music like this--not even a
high school talent show I attended contained songwriting this irritating.
Blek Ink is the first artist from Iceland that I have ever disliked. Despite being
from Iceland, Paul Lydon sounds completely American. This is home-made pop music at
its worst. Self-indulgent, artsy, and tuneless, the seventeen (17!) songs on this
CD drag on for an eternity, even though it's only 42 minutes long.
Take this lyrical sample from "Evergreen": "Spun around and touch the ground/The
flowers sprout around me/Evergreen's secrets have all been told again." Imagine that
sung in a nasal drawl, with a poorly recorded indie-pop-on-quaaludes backing track.
Then will you begin to realize Blek Ink.
I don't think I have ever heard music that begged to be ignored like this. I
listened to the CD three times and tried to concentrate, but my brain kept fighting
to do something else. Perhaps this CD could have a use in the military. I'll be
using my copy to get rid of unwanted guests.
