Archers of Loaf - Seconds Before the Accident (Alias)
Seconds Before the Accident is the newest and final release from the, now broken up, Archers of Loaf. The final album is a live recording of the band's final show in 1998 (Chapel Hill, NC), and includes 16 tracks taken from the bands many various releases.
I have been lucky enough to see the Archers play a number of times throughout the years, and I think they were a fabulous live band. They have a lot of great energy and the songs work well in a live setting. However, while listening to this album, I just kept thinking "why did they put this out?" and "I should just be listening to the actual albums since they are recorded better, and they basically sound the same." It seems clear that this was a contractural obligation. It doesn't even look like the Archers had anything to do with this release (besides that they played on it).
I think the Archers of Loaf were a wonderful band, and I would recommend all of their albums except this one to people who enjoy great independent rock or pop (like Superchunk, Pavement, Sebadoh, etc.). If Archers of Loaf fans are having post-Archers cravings, I highly suggest they spend their money on something worthwhile like the wonderful new Crooked Fingers album (Eric Bachmann's new solo album) instead.
