Archers of Loaf - Seconds Before the Accident (Alias)
Can you say "contractual obligation"?
This worthless live record by now-defunct indie rockers the Archers of Loaf (big on
college radio from 1995-97) is a tired repackaging of their hits with some less
interesting album tracks, played unimaginatively and recorded poorly.
To top it off, the liner notes are shoddy, and the bassists keeps saying stupid
things. This reminds me of the live show I saw in Spring 1997, only it's a lot
less interesting, and the songs haven't aged as well.
Being recorded in late 1998, this features some songs from their disappointing
final album White Trash Heroes. Neither "Underdogs of Nipomo" or "What Did You
Expect?" (my two favorite Archers of Loaf songs) appear here. The highlight of the
entire disc is the strange ballad, "Chumming the Oceans," that closes this long
set.
If you're a diehard fan, Seconds Before the Accident will satisfy you. It's good
to see that Archers of Loaf are continuing the rock tradition of releasing
unnecessary live albums to make money. It's too bad they couldn't have gone out
with more of a bang.
