Air - Virgin Suicides (Soundtrack) (Astralwerks)
The Virgin Suicides is a book which was adapted for screenplay and released this year as a
film. The soundtrack was written by Air. I saw the movie first, and I enjoyed it enough to
go see it again the next day. I then bought and read the book and saw the movie again. To
say the least, I liked this story quite a bit. To sum the story up in a sentence, it's
about five sisters who commit suicide, and it is narrated by a group of boys who were
intrigued with and greatly affected by the five girls. The story takes place when the boys
are in their awkward early to mid teen, and the way it's told captures the feelings of being
a 15 year old boy in awe of a girl perfectly.
I don't know how Air did it, but they managed to write the absolute perfect soundtrack for
this story. Made up mostly by melancholy pop songs sometimes driven by bass, piano, or
guitar, all of the songs carry a feeling of peace and tension that fit the mood of the
story exactly. "High School Lover" is a catchy number, which serves as the movie's theme.
"Playground Love" is a nice song with vocals that opens the CD on a very accessible pop
note. The music is all great in how simple and sad it is, but it is made so much more
powerful by the imagery the book and movie add. I recommend experiencing The Virgin
Suicides in all 3 forms: book, movie and soundtrack. It's not often a single idea is so
complete, engaging, and powerful. Furthermore, Kirsten Dunst's (who plays Lux Lisbon, the main
character in The Virgin Suicides) new movie is about a cheerleader who has attitude! What a
star!
