Evil. Doom. Drone. You must buy this album.
Earth's influence over this band is immense, but Sunn 0))) have never before distilled things down to that single element quite this well. This is the sound of a band that started as an Earth cover band, who several years and a handful of albums later, have started to overtake their influence.
For White2, Sunn 0))) still consists of core members Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson. However, they've added to the number of additional contributors. Still present from White1 are Rex Ritter (of Fontanelle, and of the late, great Jessamine) and Joe Preston (of The Thrones and formerly of The Melvins and most imporantly Earth). Add to that already star studded cast Dawn Preston (also from Jessamine) and Attila Csihar (from Mayhem!). I mean, come on! Is it even possible for this album not to totally rule?
The opening track, "Hell-0)))-Ween" is entirely at home among Earth's discography, and is probably much better than anything Dylan Carlson is likely to do nowadays. Deep riffs slowly shift before settling into a heavy, burrowing groove and drifting...for...a..long...time. "bassAliens" changes things around with ambient rumblings, quiet guitar loops, rubbing sounds, and deep, nearly subsonic speaker torture. The third and final track, "Decay2," goes deep. Attila Csihar's vocals are taken from an ancient Sanskrit text, written over 5,000 years ago. With Sunn 0)))'s accompaniment, it seems as if Attila may be conjuring all of the evil and dead that has spanned that 5,000 years and pouring it directly into the tape machine.
So, I say again: Evil. Doom. Drone. You really must buy this album.
