No. 9 - Where Come From? And Where To? EP
(Locust)

While this remix CD-single is intended to hype No. 9's new album, Mushi-No-Ne, it does a much better job of hyping the remix ability of Hrvatski. The album track, "Where Come From? and Where To?," is an interesting but forgettable waltz. Takayuki winds up his music-box-like piano sample and lets it twinkle through the track, cutting up samples of some coy French female cooing to brighten it up. It's a bit like a cabaret version of Amon Tobin, replacing all the great horn samples with smooth vocals. Hrvatski's reworking, "...Bottle of Claret For You If I'd Realised," is a big improvement, cutting up No. 9's cut-ups, creating a dense glitch-work of tone fluctuations. The drums are completely deconstructed into interesting off-kilter beats, giving the remix's more mellow, droning parts a sharp bite. Also included on the single is a reworking by Ken Brown, "Laws of Large Numbers," which deconstructs the song even further, turning the music-box-like sounds and keyboard tones into the softest, prettiest frequency modulations.
