Mammal come from an usually abrasive segment of the American digital underground. Fellow sound terrorists Wolf Eyes, Forcefield, and Hair Police should give you an idea of where they're coming from. Mammal's intriguing and cryptic Fog Walkers LP used broken down drum machines, sickly clutter, and electronic sludge to fill its grooves, but this year's Double Nature CD is an entirely different monster.
This basically amounts to a marathon in musical form. Whatever the source signals were, they are torn to shreds and utterly decimated by the time they reach your ears. Static, sine tones, screeches, and digital distortion all make for a very challenging 40 minutes. Over the albums 4 tracks, Mammal explore, very deeply, all of the facets of the sounds your modem makes.
This clearly isn't something I'll put in while I drive (at least, not again!), or any other time unless I'm very much in the mood for it, but for those moments when only pure abrasion will do, Mammal will dig deep into my spinal column and scratch the itch with ease.
