Evergreen - s/t
(Temporary Residence)

Ok, every review you'll read will mention this, so I'll just get it out of the way. This is the obscure garage rock band formed by Sean McLoughlin and Britt Walford after Slint broke up. While Britt also helped to found The Breeders, Brian McMahan formed The For Carnation and Dave Pajo went on to form Aerial M and Tortoise. So, obviously, Slint was no fluke. Those guys had some serious momentum going. And, while Evergreen was the band that wallowed in the most obscurity (by a long shot) of the post-Slint bands, they are by no means something to be ignored.

Given the current climate, Evergreen are sure to be welcomed with open arms (being an obscure band who'd already done the garage rock thing before The Strokes were even out of junior high). And, hey, whatever works, right? From the bubbly bassline and catchy vocal line of "Fairlane" to the explosive bombast of "Klark Kent" to the toned town mantra "Zoom Zoom," this album was obviously either way behind the times or several years ahead.

Aside from the original album, there are two extra tracks, (which, if I have my facts straight, come from a 7"), making this a truly complete document of this band. For the reissue, James Murphy of the DFA recorded this album, and his style is clearly evident as every track grooves and shakes on its trashy rock foundations.
