Electoral College - Eat the Key EP
(Diary)

How does the Electoral College really work? Being from outside the US, I never completely grasped the simple political process, I figured it had something do with an election and possibly a college. As it turns out, I got it partly right, as there seems to be some strong influence of college rock, at least. Add some guitar, bass and drums, and some good-ole classic indie-rock, and you've got this here rock band.

While sending delegates to a college to vote for a leader may seem a little antiquated, the musical equivalent also sounds of another time. Electoral College's fuzzed out guitars, Sonic Youth-like lyrics, and hint of discordance definitely evoke a mid-90s brand of indie-rock. Not that this is all a bad thing. Lyrics that start off rather awkward soon reveal of level of insight not typically heard in this type of music. Unfortunately, the supremely generic vocals keep Electoral College grounded. I really doubt anyone is going to say "Hey, isn't this the new Electoral College EP?" after spinning Eat the Key. It's really a shame, because some of the tracks are tight little numbers, and there is no doubt that this band can write a tune.

Give the boys a few more years at the college of indie-rock and we will see if they can produce something truly classic.
