9 out of 12 Suburban Shore cover

Camping - Suburban Shore
(Plug Research)

The draw of Brazilian music extends around the world. With an elegant, shuffling rhythm in every pluck of the guitar and soothing warmth in every brush of a drum skin, it really is no surprise that it has caught on so. The golden age of Brazilian music witnessed the likes of Caeteno Veloso, Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze, and others create a sparkling treasure box of terrific music.

Brazilian music finds one of its biggest supporters in Camping, a Washington, DC-based outfit with a German lyricist. Singer Henning Fritzenwalder lets a little of the tropics shine into his grey and brown landscape, invoking the aforementioned oldies and the fabulous but under-appreciated Os Novos Baianos. So... ya... it's just a part of the whole Brazilian-bossanova-German-electronic wave we have been hearing so much about.

To get off the Brazilian angle, Suburban Shore mines music from a host of other sources to make a slick, seductive package. The clicks and clacks and electronic sparkles of his Plug Research label counterparts are found all over the record. High production values result in a similarly well-polished sound, and classic post-rock is obviously part of the equation. OK, back to the German version of Brazilian music angle...
