Adventure Time - Dreams of Water Themes (Plug Research)
With mixmaster Daedelus, a Plug Research mainstay with a number of records to his name, and labelmate Frosty at the helm, you know you are in for a sampleistic treat. Daedelus has an ear for the syrupy string, ancient soundtrack and other kooky sounds, found after countless hours of record hunting. Adventure Time is a very fitting name for this courageous band of sound sailors, whose great tentacle arms reach out to the furthest realms of music. Grab your paper hats and climb aboard.
Dreams of Water Themes fits nicely with the other music emerging from these artists. It is a slick, seamless meld of sounds. As with Daedelus' solo work, however, the slickness at times lends itself more to coffee shop chic than the typical fakejazz reader's record collection. Rough edges are polished and glitches are fixed, although a fair share of musical quirks are thrown in for good measure. On "Eel Sand Witch," a clever concoction of Eastern twang and campfire noises creates a sun basted treat. Rapper Pigeon John lends his considerable rhyming talents to "Whetting Whistles" with sparkling results. In the end, no one can deny the expansive imagination of these music makers.
