MC Tracheotomy - W/Love From Tahiti (Bulb)
MC Tracheotomy, according to the insert in w/ Love from Tahiti, lays down some ssllooooww jjjaaaaaaaammmmzzzzz. He also happens to be on the roster of Bulb Records, a purveyor of such captivating musical projects as fractured noise merchants Wolf Eyes and odd-ball organist Quintron (who also guests on the album). Like his label-mates, MC Tracheotomy enjoys messing with us. W/ Love from Tahiti is a sample-heavy affair, with groovy beats bubbling under the surface, guided by Tracheotomy's rambling, frequently indiscernible rhymes. Technically speaking, it's quite an achievement, but probably not the kind of album most sample aficionados would listen to.
Songs such as "Now That Cha Droolin'" reminded this lo-fi boogie ignorant listener of some of Beck's earlier forays into hip-hop. The effect is something just short of booty shaking, and this side of chin-scratching. Like Beck, MC Tracheotomy is clearly schooled in his funk, hip-hop, and jazz, but never comes across as performing a parody. His periodic groans, sighs, and emotional wails should leave no one in doubt of his twisted sincerity.
Despite the plethora of sounds and samples, MC Tracheotomy's delivery is a tad repetitive. In fact, the album's surprises are some the most effective tracks, such as the snarling "Drop the Kids Off at the Pool." On the whole, W/ Love From Tahiti is good fun, not taking itself too seriously, and not crossing the line into self-importance.
