Lorelei - Our Minds Have Been Electrified
(Ice-Made)

Lorelei are a band named after one of the Gilmore girls from the WB's hit TV show "Gilmore Girls." I know this because I live in Los Angeles, California, home of Hollywood, USA, and, thus, am totally down with TV. It goes without saying that I love all rock music about TV, such as Black Flag's classic tribute to awesome TV, "TV Party," and that one Steel Pole Bath Tub song where Mrs. Brady is all getting on Greg for something mean he did to Marsha. That one totally rocks!

Lorelei, however, is not really about TV at all, even though they have a song called "Joan Jett," which is a pretty rockin' tune in the punk style. One must remember that Joan Jett was not a TV celebrity. You are thinking of Leather Tuscadero, who was played by someone else (although Joan Jett was in a movie with TV's own Alex P. Keaton, as played by Michael J. Fox).

What Lorelei is about is having two basses and one drummer. They are not, though, as aggressive or intense as Enemy Mine; as intricate and purely musical as Dianogah; nor as inventive or as funky as Ui. That is, they have not freed their basses from the traditional rock and roll rhythm section function. So, while their songs have drive and energy, and the vocals have a decent sense of melody, the music incongruously plods along, heavy with thudding basses and pounding drums, but nothing to bring it beyond the low-end. Their songs are not bad, but they leave you with a sense that they haven't taken their development all the way. Not bad, but so what?

Lorelei does not necessarily need six-string guitars. They need something besides some heavy riffs. They need a better sense of what their instruments are capable of. And, most importantly, they need more songs about the bittersweet romantic adventures of Lorelei Gilmore and her mom.
