Erase Errata - Dancing Machine: Erase Errata Remix Record (Troubleman Unlimited)
What does a remix mean? As it becomes cheaper and easier to create tones and structure songs on a computer, it seems like the word "remix" only means, "I was thinking of that song when I wrote this one" or worse yet "The person who wrote that song asked me to write this one." This four song, 18-minute long remix EP is a playful collection of songs, but it has very little to do with Erase Errata. Matmos' remix of "Other Animals are No. 1" uses the opening four seconds of the original as an intro but then cuts it off with a few seconds of silence before launching into a completely new song. The new song is tied to the old one in theme, but aside from a one note snippet of guitar used as rhythm, the sounds are all completely new. Kid 606 and Adult. use Hoysten's vocals (at least?) but match it with retro electronics. Kid 606's contribution, "Retreat, the Most Familiar," at least seems fitting, matching the singing to nihilistic, dark Liars-esque sounds and tight rhythms as opposed to Erase Errata's quirky and sloppy energy. Adult., however, just makes "Marathon" an Adult. song, using the cheapest, worst keyboard sounds possible. Kevin Blechdom closes the EP with a kitchen-sink-inclusive collage of sounds, which is hilariously non-musical and unlistenable. This remix album gives off the impression that Erase Errata's music has no merit, and the band is only interesting due to the femme vocals, the emotion, and the shallow politics. While this EP will appeal to fans of the remixers, it's very disposable music and has little relevance to those who are foremost fans of the source material.
