8 out of 12 Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story) EP cover

!!! - Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story) EP
(Touch and Go)

While No Neck Blues Band and the Blithe Sons are a bunch of hippies doing what hippies usually do—like jamming and communing with nature and smoking pot—!!! are a bunch of hippies doing something totally un-hippy-like. They're making disco music. !!!'s new release, "Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story)," is a one song/one remix 12" which is pretty unessential but marks good progress in the band's ability to translate the energy of their "dance party" live show into a recorded format. The new song ("Me and Giuliani...") is a near 11 minute jam session that moves back and forth between post punk and loyally interpreted funk. Starting from the clanging beats of Gang of Four-esque post punk, the 8-strong group interjects some Tower of Power-esque horn before drifting into Moroder-esque fatalistic rhythms. After some searing guitars bring the sound back to the post-punk realm, the song degrades into tribal, pure funk hand-claps and doo-doo-doo vocals. While this song is one of !!!'s best recordings, the B-side is just a remix of "Intensify" from the band's self titled debut, entitled "Intensifieder Sunracapellectroshit Mix 03." If the remix incorporated Sun Ra, a cappella, and electroshit into the already strong rhythms, it would be something to behold, but instead it just tries to turn the song's refrain into a stadium anthem.
