Aroah - No Podemos Ser Amigos (Acuarela)
Aroah's first full-length album, No Podemos ser Amigos, is full of contemplative, enchanting songs with smart lyrics that explore love and relationships, whether good or bad. Irene Tremblay is the songwriter, singer, and guitarist of Aroah. Her voice and guitar are the main attractions of the album. Irene's voice is clear and frank, and complements her gracefully-played guitar, which creates the moods of the album.
Usually acoustic, she can make the guitar sparkle, like in "Her IQ #1," or
mourn, like in "Happiness Avoids Me." The melodies of the songs are pronounced and intriguing, like in "The Biggest Idiot in the World" and "X-Song" (one of my favorites on the album). She also uses drums, xylophone, and synthesizers, accompanying the guitar and adding more depth to the songs. Tremblay, who is half Spanish, sings several of the songs in said language, and the Spanish influence on the album often makes it a bit exotic and even mysterious.
No Podemos Ser Amigos is an impressive debut by an obviously talented musician.
