9 out of 12 Two Brothers EP cover

Abunai - Two Brothers EP
(Camera Lucida)

This final release from the Boston quartet is only three songs long but anyone who enjoyed Abunai!'s way around neo-psych trips via their albums and their often wondrous live appearances probably needs this sucker. Two Brothers is a nice enough blend of everything early seventies in their preferred spheres—watery flanged guitar, steady spacerock pulse bringing on the stoner feedback, 'groovy man' vibes and dank folky mysticism in spades. Help from various guests on everything from flute to, on the extended semi-dub version on the second side of the EP, a brief bit of spoken word oddity fleshes out the whole trip. Meanwhile, a live take on "Lord Hampton" from Terrastock IV rounds it out—a stomping take on an old ballad style that refers to a messy Boston-area murder of recent times, it's both witty and fierce.
