8 out of 12 Three Pieces for Violin cover

Warren Ellis - Three Pieces for Violin
(King Crab)

These three untitled pieces (a cumulative 16 minutes) were originally recorded as a soundtrack of some kind. Those familiar with the Dirty Three, for whom Ellis also plays violin, will recognize elements of Ellis' style: the distortion and effects, bizarre multitracking, ragged bowing, scrapes, skronk and so forth. As is often the case with soundtrack music, however, the pieces are all atmosphere and accent, and seem to be lacking a center (provided by the missing element to which the music is accompaniment). The music is mad and haunting, and very striking. If you love the Dirty Three and what you've heard before from Ellis, this is a worthwhile addition to your collection, although it lacks the emotional resonance and impact of his other music.
