Justin Vellucci - In Memory of Eden's Sons, Who Were
(Secret Decoder)

Justin Vellucci seems to have a pretty dark vision. Just look at the title of his new record. It's all about dead people. And the artwork: a black silhouette (I presume it's Vellucci's) against a wall with contrasting off white and black colors. Then look at the back: a cloudy night sky over a dark weather vane. And the song titles: "silences," "flight with iron wings," "for shadows in the sea," "this terror, incidental." You can't go into this expecting "All You Need Is Love."

The album is all about textures. The first track, "the dust of," sounds like Black Sabbath (circa their first album) recording a lost Pink Floyd instrumental. If that sounds as scary to you as it does to me, then I wouldn't suggest getting this, because the rest isn't any better. Vellucci makes these slow dirge-like non-songs where, if you listen really hard, shut off all outside noises, and stop the circulation of blood from your heart to your brain, you might discern something of interest.

In Memory of Eden's Sons, Who Were feels like a technically able musician without anything to play. If Vellucci were playing in a band, or just doing covers, it might be worth listening to. As it is, while the textures of this album might seem temporarily intriguing, a closer listen reveals there's nothing past the surface.
