Sonic Youth - Murray Street
(DGC)

[The following is a one hundred percent true story.]

I had a dream last night that I was going to be performing at some kind of Public Image, Ltd., tribute festival. I was thinking about playing a loud rocker from Album, but then I thought about maybe something a bit more interesting like "Theme" or "Albatross." The next thing that I know, I'm about to take the stage with Sonic Youth, sans Kim. I announced us as "Sonic Youth minus one plus one." (In dreamland, Jim O'Rourke does not exist. Sorry Jim!) Despite my general lack of musical knowledge or skill I managed to incompetently bang my way through a couple of Sonic Youth numbers (apparently I have considerable more talent in dreams). At the end of our set I took my guitar by the headstock and began smashing it against a special custom homemade amp that my good friend Ned hand made for me, obliterating both. Lee was totally impressed.

Now, I don't know exactly when rock and roll was invented, but I'll go ahead and say that it was in 1955. This means that rock and roll will be 50 years old in a couple of years. The greatest band of the second half of rock and roll is Sonic Youth. The greatest band of the first half is the Rolling Stones. But that is another story.
