Sianspheric - The Sound of the Colour of the Sun
(Sonic Unyon)

So there's this band called Sianspheric who have a released a few albums (4 to be exact), and they're from Canada. Their first album came out in 1995, and resulted in one of it's guitarists, Paul Sinclair, leaving the band. It took them until 1998 to follow it up with the second full length. It was, to say the least, a huge leap forward and seemed to show that the band had come out of the lineup change way ahead. Now, with another album (and an EP) behind them since then, their new album, The Sound of the Colour of the Sun shows Sianspheric with another lineup change; Paul Sinclair has returned, as well as new guy, Locksley Taylor.

Now, this makes me a little wary. I mean, they had gotten so much better once Sinclair left, and they had built up a really good momentum with their releases since. However, while listening to the opening track, "Audiophone," this idea is quickly abandoned as soon as the waves of delayed guitar swell into an explosive release worthy of any dream collaboration between Kevin Shields and Mogwai. As the rest of the band fades out, the wah-ed guitar floats along, pushing nearer and nearer to the point of breaking.

It seems Sianspheric has only solidified their intent, and nothing will deter them from reaching for their otherworldly ambient rock wanderings. "Slightly Less Sunshine" starts as a sparse and atmospheric, but still relatively straight ahead song, before it slowly builds it's way into noisy oblivion. The airy vocals, delayed guitar, and explosive rock / melancholy ambience all betray a "shoegaze" tag, but their delivery does much to further the idea of a new generation of ambient pop musicians that goes beyond the shoegaze scene.

Detroit isn't all that far from Canada.
