Andrew Rieger/Yume Bitsu - split 12"
(Planaria)

Andrew Rieger is in Elf Power. Yume Bitsu are from Portland, Oregon, and have released two albums on Ba Da Bing! and two on K Records. Their latest, The Golden Vessyl of Sound was, hands down, my album of the year.

Andrew's side is nothing like Elf Power. A single 18:21 drone piece made up of ebow-ed guitar and bass and strummed acoustic guitar, "Tentacles" is a meditation. Its entrancing repetition lulls the listener into a sense of lost time and place. Overall, it is a pretty, but somewhat aimless exercise in repetition, which has been done better elsewhere.

The Yume Bitsu songs were recorded around the time they did Auspicious Winds and sound very much like a mix between songs like "Sharp, Twisted" and "Truth" (from the second album). The first, "Be Afraid" builds on two synthesizer chords, adding drums, two guitars, bass, and Adam's crystalline vocals. "Glider Flight Over the Outer Reaches of Drystyn," an upbeat song driven by Franz's pulsing ebow-ed guitar, rounds out their side. These songs are wonderful lost nuggets and make this 12" worth tracking down.
