Pinback - Penelope EP
(Cutty Shark)

Penelope—released by Cutty Shark—is the first single from Pinback's new album, Blue Screen Life. In the past Pinback have released a few things on this label with extra tracks that were absolutely among their best songs, specifically the extra tracks on the European version of their first album, and the Loro single. For this single, they've made no exception, including an interesting demo version of an album track and a great unreleased track.

The previously unreleased track, "Anti-Hu" (as in anti-human), is a somber, mid-tempo song, which recalls the tense calm of the first album. If Pinback wrote 100 albums full of songs like this, I would never tire of them. The demo is of the song "Seville" and bears little difference to the album version other than it has a rougher edge and slightly muddier sound. It's nice to hear these types of recordings from a band occasionally—for me, they can sometimes really bring the music to life when I hear a rough recording.

As is the case with nearly all of the Pinback releases, "Penelope" easily falls into my "you really need to get this" category. Though short and (at import prices) bound to be a little pricey, you aren't going to find much better value for your few measly dollars than the latest single from the best pop band ever.
