Parker and Lily - Here Comes Winter (Manifesto)
The music of Parker and Lily's newest album, Here Comes Winter, conjures the same sort of nostalgia and longing as their first album, Hello Halo, does. The mix of frolicking beats and keyboards and Parker's worldly guitar and muffled vocals contrast innocent, light sounds with melancholy, experienced ones. For example, the music of "Planes in Clouds" reminds me of peppy music from an old video game, with its silly organ and little electronic blips and imitation DJ scratch coming in every so often. But the softly sung lyrics, "We pass in shadows/Like planes in clouds with our lights out" put a damper on things, but not in a bad way. It's a welcome balance.
This contrast between happy and sad, and light and dark, is the best thing about Parker and Lily, and it is found in nearly every song on Here Comes Winter. The songs are varied enough, however, that the album is interesting. Some songs, like "Interior:Airport" and "Bonn" are instrumental and very cinematic, conjuring images of machinery, rainy streets, and flickering neon lights. Parker and Lily definitely have a trademark sound, which they began with Hello Halo and have continued with Here Comes Winter. It's a little melancholy, yes, but its also sparkly and bright and a lovely second album for Parker and Lily.
