The Nationale - s/t
(Fighting Electric)

I don’t like the Nationale because not only do they not bring anything new to the table, but they also lack the drive to make their derivative sound very compelling (and we all know bands that have a great knack for doing that). Sounding like a math-ed out Rites of Spring with Davey Von Bohlen for a singer, they give me a headache. Isn’t math rock supposed to be harsh? Aggressive? Davey Von Bohlen is not harsh or aggressive, although I’m convinced that the Nationale’s plight is to convince us that he is. Or something. I don’t even know, nor do I care. Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover, because the ugly-as-sin artwork on this EP is just as bad as the limp, uninspired music contained within.
