Melt Banana - 666 6"
(Level Plane)

Ok, it's a 6" record, so of course it's called 666. Anyone could have seen that one coming, but it's still funny.

The frantic noise these angry Japanese folks create throws down a challenge to the most spastic of American hardcore and toughest of the no-wave/noise-rock/whatever bands who have come from the Providence artrock crowd and Chicago's Skin Graft label. A few years ago I was staying up all night with some friends, when at about 4am we put in Scratch or Stitch by Melt Banana. By the time it was over, I felt like my brain had been microwaved and my head was used to test the strength of sledgehammers. I ended up in bed for a week (turns out I had the flu—and bad). So, after that night, I associated Melt Banana with physical pain. I don't underestimate the power they wield. The three short songs they've packed onto this single are as furious and high strung as they come. The stuttered rhythm and synthesizer on "About" make it my favorite of the three. Most importantly, Melt Banana is best appreciated in small doses, which makes this an unbeatable shoe-in for my favorite Melt Banana release.
