Kinski - Semaphore EP (Sub Pop)
As a teaser to their upcoming full length and their first for their new home, Sub Pop (Strange Attractors will be handling the vinyl), Kinski have released this short taste of what's to come.
Opening the EP is "Semaphore," which will be on the new album, and is possibly my favorite song of the past several months. Heavily tremeloed guitar pulses out a thick melody, meandering toward and building up to their most triumphant explosion of dynamic yet. When the hammer drops on this song, there's no question these guys are from Seattle, and should be the flagship of Sub Pop. It's the perfect label for this enormous cacophony.
"Point That Thing Somewhere Else" (a cover of New Zealand's The Clean) is the only vocal track on the EP, which is a nice change in pace from the other tracks. Kinski's recent forays into abstract improv under the name Herzog and guitarist/occasional singer Chris Martin's solo project Ampbuzz leave their fingerprints on the fractured "The Bunnies are Tough." While "I
Wouldn't Hurt a Fly" returns to the epic melodic instrumentals they have mastered so well. Listening to this, it's 1991 all over again, but with a Back-to-the-Future-II-Biff's-World-type-change where Popul Vuh or Neu's influence replaces the prevalent Aerosmith or Kiss apings.
Semaphore hints at an album that could dwarf their amazing second album, Be Gentle With The Warm Turtle.
