Extra Glenns - Martial Arts Weekend (Absolutely Kosher)
This is nice, quirky pop music in the vein of They Might Be Giants or a happier John Vanderslice. There's nothing particularly special about the Extra Glenns, but they've got a nice sound that's pleasant. In fact, it's quite smooth. Smooth like a toasted bagel with cream cheese. That smooth. Well-produced and fun to listen to. What more could you want?
Well, I'll tell you. I'm not a fan of highly derivative music. These guys bear an almost uncanny similarity to They Might Be Giants. Two guys, both sharing the same name, Johns, meet the Glenns. Yeah, so that's my big gripe with them. Otherwise they make nice pop music. Highlights on the album include the melancholy "Baltimore," the sweetly piano driven "Memories" (absolutely nothing to do with Cats), and the pretty "Malevolent Seascape Y."
While I enjoy this, I can't seem to summon up as much energy about it as I can something like John Vanderslice's Time Travel is Lonely. This might be for a number of reasons, I'm not sure. There's just something about the Extra Glenns that make it seem like more of a fun after-work kind of venture. They enjoyed making it, I enjoyed listening, but I don't think it's something that's going to be in heavy rotation.
