Back to Bhutan - s/t EP
(Journal Reprint)

Back to Bhutan play mostly deconstructed indie rock, neither electronic-leaning like Deerhoof and the Animal Collective but neither rock like US Maple or Beefheart, more as something akin to Avey Tare and Al Johnson fronting an early Folk Implosion. I know the description is a bit odd, but go back and listen to Take a Look Inside, and I think you'll find the comparison apt.

Falsettos, whispers, scratching, and raspy shouts make up most of the vocals, standard structures are eschewed in favor of songs that begin normally enough but then abruptly devolve into the pluck of a single guitar, only to start back into the maelstrom of the "verse" again. The formula, if that word can be applied to something that attempts to do away with formulas, works well, as does the addition of various other instruments including recorders, violins and keyboards, which spruce up the sparse guitar playing.

Fun and interesting at the same time, I'm awaiting a longer album from these guys (this s/t EP is only 5 songs and about 20 minutes long).
