Windy & Carl/Landing - split album
(Music Fellowship)

This CD was released to help support the recently wrapped up Windy & Carl/Landing tour of the Northeastern United States, and it features one track from Windy & Carl and three tracks from Landing for over 40 minutes of music.

The Windy & Carl song "untitled" is a classic piece of Windy & Carl drone. It features Carl's legendary guitar work which is (perfectly) accented by keyboard and the tinkling of chimes--and it is magic. After the release of their (excellent) album Consciousness, I expected the song to be more along the lines of that album, but this song would seem more at home on Depths and is quite extended, which gives you time to get lost in the denseness of the guitar. Windy & Carl's other contribution to this album are the covers, which were hand-painted by Windy.

The Landing songs are every bit as excellent, and represent a new direction for Landing. The most exceptional is the first song "Along" which begins with a delicate drone, which then drops out to reveal clean guitars themes intertwining, at the end of which Aaron sings repeatedly "you were right all along." If you read my review of Circuit in this issue, you know how I feel about Landing, and this is probably my favorite song they have ever done. The greatness continues with "Where the Leaves No Longer Grow" which is another example of their cleaner, more concise new direction, and "Passage to Sleep" which features excellent male vocals on top of a slowly developing guitar theme.

This split album is simply excellent from start to finish.
