11 out of 12 Gulliver Whiskey 20 7" cover

Windy & Carl/Electroscope - Gulliver Whiskey 20 7"
(Jonathon Whiskey)

I was forewarned of this release by Windy herself before we played a show with them in Bowling Green, Ohio. She told me to expect the poppiest song that they had ever recorded. Nicknamed the "Stereolab Song," Windy told us that she and Carl were afraid that it was a bit too poppy.

When I opened up the 7" (packaged wonderfully by Jonathan Whiskey in a thick cardboard wrapper) and started to play the Windy & Carl song, I fell in love immediately with the sing-songy melodies and beautiful simplicity. It is by no means too poppy. On the contrary, I think that it is a welcome break from what their focus has been lately and makes me appreciate the variety of sounds that they have produced over the years. Another brilliant Windy & Carl product indeed!

The second side features Electroscope with Printed Circuit. I must say that I prefer a solid, traditionally structured song to a whole lot of cool sounds and because of this, Electroscope is not my favorite band (though I do own a couple of 7"s and their first full length and do enjoy them). This release seems to be in line with their usual fair. That being said, if I'm in the mood for some really cool soundscapes, the Electroscope side will be first onto the platter!

This release continues the tradition of mega excellent Jonathon Whiskey releases.
