Unwed Sailor - The Faithful Anchor (Lovesick)
Johnathon Ford, former bassist for Roadside Monument and Pedro
the Lion, makes the bass the center of his newest band Unwed Sailor.
Reviewing the band's new album, The Faithful Anchor, is hard.
It's hard because I already know what Dianogah sounds like, and
Unwed Sailor sounds exactly like Dianogah. There's not much else
to say after that. All differences are very minor, whether it's
the occasional use of keyboards, like the drone in "In the
Presence of Thrones," or the quieter, sparser sections, like in
"The Quiet Hours." Once the melody kicks in, though--always centered on
the bass and always in an upbeat, pop manner--Unwed Sailor ends
up sounding just like Dianogah. I really like Dianogah though,
so I end up liking Unwed Sailor as well. A great thing about
Dianogah is that they show rock/post-rock is possible using just
bass guitars. Unwed Sailor's music shows, however, that Dianogah
didn't really break a barrier for the bass guitar; they just kind
of pushed it back a little.
