The Unstable Ensemble - 17 Ways
(Family Vineyard)

I feel bad reviewing this record because I have such a tremendous prejudice against this type of music that it seems unfair asking me to evaluate it. There is virtually no way that I can even make the pretense of being objective. So what I am going to do is just provide the basic facts and let you, dear reader, discern from them on your own whether you think you might be into this.

The Unstable Ensemble is a five piece from Bloomington, Indiana, comprise of a couple of saxophones, guitar, drums, and flute, with several members doubling on "electronics." Each of the 17 tracks on this record were "spontaneously composed." They consider themselves to be jazz musicians.

Those are the facts. Here is my take. The name Unstable Ensemble sounds like a Isotope 217 ripoff, and the "spontaneous compositions" sounds like five dudes assing around--it's completely incoherent. This is the fakest jazz.
