Third Eye Foundation - I Poo Poo on Your Juju (Merge)
I have not been a fan of Third Eye Foundation in the
past; in fact in the (admittedly) very limited
exposure I've had to them before now I would have said
this was a band that I didn't care for at all. When I
got this copy of I Poo Poo On Your Juju I was even
less excited because it is just a remix album (with
the exception of one track). So you can imagine my
surprise when it was actually really, really good.
In spite of the fact that the album is essentially a
remix album (a format that is unsuccessful almost
without fail) the album is remarkably consistent.
Like many of Third Eye Foundations releases the album
has a dark, somewhat unnerving tone, and since I am
not familiar with most of the selections being remixed,
I'm not sure if this is a result of the work of Mr.
Elliot, or if he has just made excellent choices of
what to remix.
Some of the most successful tracks are the third (a
remix of Urchins' "Snuffed Candles"), the opening
track (a remix of Yann Tierson's "La Dispute"), and the
sixth (a remix of Blonde Redhead's "Four
Damaged Lemons"). "Snuffed Candles" features a very
prominent beat (almost Mo' Wax in style) over the top
of an assortment of sounds including some very strange
wails and moans, "La Dispute" consists mostly of a
single piano theme but manages to fit very well
with the more straight-forward beat driven tracks. "Four
Damaged Lemons" is the first track on the album to
feature vocals, and the vocals are the perfect
complement to the schizophrenic feel of the album.
This album is (apparently) the final release from
Third Eye Foundation, and while a remix album seems
like a strange choice for your final release, this one
seems quite appropriate (especially considering Matt
Elliot's long history of remixes). The album has no
real weak spots and is successful in almost every
respect which makes it (I'm fairly confident) the best
remix album ever made.
