Various Artists - Series 7 (Soundtrack) (Koch)
Girls Against Boys' Geffen Records debut, Freakonica, is possibly the best
example I am familiar with of a band
trying to make the jump from indie to major, where they fail so completely
that they lose a good deal of their original
fans without making very many new ones.
Here comes this soundtrack for a movie I haven't seen called Series 7.
It's some sort of fictional reality-based story, and Girls Against Boys
were asked to do the soundtrack. So,
they wrote songs that would work to
accompany television shorts and would still have impact. The result is 12
new songs that don't really hold their
own among their old albums, but bodes well for future efforts. The
improvement over Freakonica is most heard
on "Tweaker" which sounds like a b-side from House of GVSB.
Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is also included, as well as an
unbearably bad love song, "Wedding
Serenade," by Menking.
It isn't really fair to judge Girls Against Boys' songs against their
regular material which was intended for an
entirely different purpose. However, they do fit in somewhere between
House of GVSB and Freakonica. They
aren't as postured as the songs on their last album, but they just don't have
the gusto of their decent songs, much
less the great ones.
