Roots of Orchis - s/t EP (Slowdance)
Last year's The Red House in Winter combined sweeping synthesizers, heady
interplay between
all of the instruments, and a keen sense of jazz pop songwriting. This year,
on their s/t EP,
The Roots of Orchis' sound has shifted a bit, following a beat or dub-oriented path.
The rhythm section often finds itself dubbing out, which is very off-putting.
The guitars and
keyboard shift between providing quiet ambience to the occasional burst of
melody. The use of
noise on this EP is very powerful, providing the grooves the band locks
itself into with some
purpose by muddying the sound with a wall of sonic love.
The track that sticks out is "Fat, Furious and Fluffy." Two bass guitars
(or is that a second
guitar?) wander around a melody as the keyboard whirrs and builds
underneath. A Tristeza-esque
guitar part adds some bright depth when it makes its presence felt.
The Roots of Orchis' interesting sense of melody is growing stronger, I just
hope they don't bury
it with too much of an emphasis on groove.
